I’m inspired by the large open blue sky, at times I even need to see it to feel free and alive. This amazing colour is refracted and reflected around us in a multitude of ways allowing the healing properties to permeate every part of our life.. When contemplating how to replicate this visual pleasure, I needed to examine what is linked under this one amazing body, like a blanket protecting us all,  while at the same time creating great visual diversity. .

This the colours and landforms I have painted are all ‘under the  blue sky’ and in its variety, is a metaphor for our cultural and society differences, we too are all under the one blue sky. These painting are my experiences and personnel pleasures of the blue green waters of the great South West and warm earth sunsets of the North West of our land. They would not be so varied or similar with out the large sky.

Di Taylor, September 2011

Starting my art career at the National Art School in Sydney at 17, this year I’m proud to announce that I have been accepted to exhibit in London. As well as many solo exhibitions this year, Margaret River , Sydney, Melbourne, Broome, Perth and Mandurah. I have participated in the Cow Parade Margaret River, Artist in Residence at Cable Beach Club Resort Broome, Artist in Residence His Majesties Theatre Perth, Love Angel Foundation exhibition and the Breast Cancer Foundation events.

My inspiration comes from seeing and portraying simple truths, with honor and integrity. I try to shout out, emphasizing the importance of seeing and enjoying every day. With the paint I am leaving a simple reminder in texture and colour, representing a feeling or realization of an integral part of our belonging and environment.

‘Lines Across Our Land’ is a reflection of my past and the intrinsic connection to the land and large open spaces. After college I left Sydney with my first husband to live on his family property in Northern NSW. I was a young mother and stuck in a small work mans cottage without a phone, car, or television. Moving from my independent lifestyle of a Sydney art student in Taylor Square to the isolation of the land, I soon learnt the importance of that simple party line, the one connection to my family. On that Party Line were seven Mrs. Taylor’s all connected by hand cranked phones, which I still to this day remember my call sign. This painting is not only an indulgence in colour and freedom, to feel the enormous space of our Land, but recognition that it’s the ‘lines’ that have kept our country together.

The haze of purple hues blurs the horizon in the heat expelled from the burnt oranges and red earth of our land. The quiet isolation and timelessness are deliberately cut like a knife by the roads and telegraph poles that cut across our land. From this quite timeless landscape, a more personnel memory is evoked and my need for connection to the world.

My techniques have an element of risk taking, exploring new mediums and immediacy. The orange is a translucent paint brushed on in large quantities with large brushes, resulting in a vibrancy and life all of its own. By allowing the paint to drive the painting, provides challenges and unexpected successes and means that I have to be flexible. By following my passions for the red earth, large spaces and the strong colours of our landscape, I inevitably engage in a record of time and places from my experiences.
